I enjoy the opportunity to be creative and play with the elements of art as a cubist painter. Most of the time I start with sketches from life in a realistic style. Next I will either make a cubist drawing to paint from or just start painting using the sketches as a reference. Some of my paintings are loose and others are somewhat graphic. I almost always struggle with paintings because I am fighting with the tendency to create an image rather than seeing the painting as an object with a spirit and life of its own. While I believe this is possible in any style of painting, cubism offers me the opportunity to explore unlimited creative possibilities while building the painting into and object and not just painting a painting of something.
